Visiting Administrator Professional Development Program

Program Description: The AAUA Visiting Administrator Professional Development Program provides AAUA members with an opportunity to engage in a one- or two-week professional development experience with an administrator at another institution followed by continuing contact over the intervening several months following the visit.

Program Design: Currently employed college/university administrators wishing to participate in this program will identify the outcomes to be achieved during a short-term (1 or 2 weeks) visit to another institution. Consistent with AAUA's function as a non-specialist organization, participants may choose to visit with role-alike administrators but are also encouraged to consider the professional development opportunities associated with a visit to an administrator in a "role-different" setting, or in a visit that would include interaction with individuals in a variety of professional roles. Following the short-term visit, a mentor from the host institution will maintain contact over a period of several months to facilitate on-going professional growth. Participants will be provided housing for the duration of the visit (usually in on-campus facilities). All other expenses including transportation to the visiting site and meals will be borne by the participant.

Responsibilities of the Host Institution: The host institution will provide housing for participants for the duration of the one- or two-week campus visit; will arrange for transportation between airport/train station and campus; will identify a cooperating administrator who will be responsible for mentoring the professional development of the visitor and will provide personnel to coordinate the visit; will provide the visitor with an office (equipped with computer and Internet connection); and, will arrange a visit itinerary which meets the professional development goals of the visitor.

Responsibilities of the Cooperating Administrator (from the Host Institution): The cooperating administrator at the host institution will consult with the participant prior to the visit and arrange a mutually agreeable schedule for the visit. He/she will communicate with the participant throughout the visit to ensure that the intended goals are being met; and, he/she will communicate via e-mail with the participant for a period of at least three months following the visit, offering support and suggestions for continued professional growth.

Responsibilities of the Participant (Visiting Administrator): The participating administrator (who must be a member of AAUA) will be responsible for securing the sponsorship of his/her home institution to participate in the program, and will be responsible for financing his/her own travel to and from the host institution as well a board and miscellaneous expenses. He/she is expected to present a description of interest and intended outcomes with the application to participate, and is responsible for communicating with appropriate personnel at the host institution regarding the development of detailed plans for the visit. The participant is also expected to engage in open, professionally relevant dialogue with his/her mentor (cooperating administrator) from the host institution prior to, during, and for a period of at least three months following the visit.

Confidentiality: Although participants are required to demonstrate support from their home institution as a condition of participating in the Visiting Administrator Professional Development Program, no details—beyond the fact that the participant did, in fact, engage in the activities of the visit—will be divulged to any third party. Responsibility for sharing any details of either the visit or of the professional development plan associated with the visit rests solely with the participant.

Participating Institutions: College and universities which currently participate as host institutions include the American College of Thessaloniki (Thessaloniki, Greece), the International University (Vienna, Austria), Rhode Island College (Providence, Rhode Island), and the University of Mary Washington (Fredericksburg, Virginia).

Application Requirements: Applicants are required to submit (1) a short description of the current position and responsibilities of the applicant; (2) a short description of the professional development outcomes that the applicant seeks from the experience and of the characteristics (both professional role and personal) sought in an administrative mentor; (3) a current curriculum vitae; (4) an endorsement letter from the applicant's administrative superior. Applications should be submitted to the association's general secretary at the address indicated at the bottom of this page. (Note: Participants must be members of AAUA.)
